Toyota admits shortage of 500 parts, can’t tell when full production resumes

With the disruption of supplies to carmakers’ plants, it would take a considerable amount of time before full production of Japanese automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. will resume. A Toyota spokesman revealed that there is a problem with the supply of 500 parts, making it quite impossible to estimate when things will get back to normal. A source told Reuters that Toyota had informed its primary suppliers that production won’t resume until April 11 at the earliest. Eighteen of Toyota’s domestic factories have stopped running while two continue production. These two plants started to build a limited number of three hybrid models, such as the Prius, last Monday.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn went to one of its factories in the northeast of Japan where he told workers that he aims to have the site return to full production levels by early June at the latest, according to Autonews. This engine factory is located in Iwaki, which is only about 50 km (30 miles) away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where efforts are ongoing to control the radiation.

According to a Nissan spokesman, Ghosn has no plans to shut down the site. Ghosn said that he is monitoring Nissan’s suppliers and that he expects the factory to be ready to begin production at the end of April and to achieve full production in June. In a recent interview with Reuters, Nissan said that it seeks for production to be normal starting mid-April with the expected deliveries from suppliers. However, it also anticipates that deliveries of several parts will take a longer time to stabilize.[via - 4wheelsnews]

Porsche plans mid-engined car to rival Ferrari 458 Italia

Porsche is planning a new mid-engined supercar that may directly rival models from Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini if it does get the go signal from parent firm Volkswagen. The new two-seater is meant to be a regular model instead of as a high-priced, limited-edition production special. It is meant to be slotted above the 911 but under the 918 Spyder. Porsche is considering roadster and coupé versions for this model. It’s expected to enter the same price category as the Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. In a recent interview, Porsche boss Mathias Muller said that Porsche aims to extend the range. He also talked about a plan to develop another mid-engined model that will be positioned above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder.

Muller hinted that development of this new supercar has gone past the initial drawing board stage, says Autocar. He said that in the coming months, the company will continue to develop its styling and design ideas and will also assess the “economic side” before deciding whether to proceed. Unitary steel construction is what’s used on the Boxster, Cayman and 911 but in order to reduce the weight, Porsche is thinking of extensively using carbonfibre-reinforced plastic.

The firm has used lightweight construction in recent low-volume models such as the Carrera GT and 911 GT2 RS. It’s believed that the business case for this supercar is focused on annual global sales of between 2500 and 3000, about half that of the 911 Turbo and several of its derivatives, including the GT2.[via - 4wheelsnews]

Compared to newer competitors like the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, the Accord's cabin looks and feels a bit down-market. The plastics aren't as nice and the look is rather drab -- especially if you opt for gray. Honda has made some slight changes to the convoluted climate controls found on navigation-equipped models this year, but the Accord's center stack continues to be plagued by far too many buttons.
Nevertheless, it's important to note that the 2011 Honda Accord remains a solid pick among family sedans. It's spacious, fuel-efficient and reliable and should hold its value well. The Accord also comes in a sporty coupe body style, something that few other automakers offer in their midsize models. So we still recommend the Accord. But choices like the Fusion, Optima, Sonata, Mazda 6 and even the Suzuki Kizashi now outpace the Accord in many areas, so the answer to "What midsize sedan should I buy?" is now more muddled than it used to be.
2011 Honda Accord is available as a midsize sedan and coupe. The sedan comes in LX, LX-P, SE, EX and EX-L trim levels, while the coupe comes in LX-S, EX and EX-L trims.
The base LX trim comes equipped with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a height-adjustable manual driver seat and a six-speaker sound system with CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The LX-P trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels and an eight-way power driver seat. The SE adds leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable driver lumbar and heated front seats. The EX adds or supplants LX-P equipment with 17-inch alloys, a more powerful four-cylinder engine, a sunroof, heated mirrors, power-adjustable driver lumbar, upgraded interior trim, a six-CD changer and a USB audio jack.
The EX-L adds automatic headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth, a seven-speaker upgraded sound system, satellite radio and the option of a navigation system with voice control and a rearview camera. A V6-equipped EX-L also gains driver seat memory settings and a four-way power passenger seat.
The coupe's LX-S trim is equipped similarly to the LX sedan, but gets 17-inch wheels and a six-disc CD changer. The EX coupe does not include the power-adjustable driver lumbar, but does get the EX-L sedan's upgraded stereo without satellite radio. Both lumbar and satellite radio are added to the EX-L. Opting for the EX-L with a V6 also adds 18-inch wheels.

Making its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2012 is the next generation of Renault’s supermini, which will be given dramatic Dezir-inspired styling cues. In an Autocar interview, Renault sales and marketing boss Steve Norman said that the Dezir “directly inspired” the Clio 4 and so the engineers have aimed for it to look as close as possible to the concept. Other sources said that the entry-level Clios will feature a ‘stretched’ stance.” A source said that even the basic Clio 4s will have a dramatic look. A further developed version of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will take on the Nürburgring 24 hour race on June 25. During development, Porsche prioritized efficiency via the targeted optimization of hybrid components, which also led to a 20% weight reduction. It’s expected that version 2.0 of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be able to achieve the same lap times as its predecessor but with less fuel consumption. The hybrid’s general layout was taken from the 2010 model. The front wheels are driven by a portal axle with two electric motors and supplements the four-liter. Its six-cylinder boxer engine at the rear delivers around 470hp, depending on the performance details. Both electric motors can now deliver 75 kilowatts each, from 60 kilowatts previously.

With the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0, pilots can have additional power of nearly 200hp that they can use for seconds at a time. Depending on the programming, this power can be automatically activated with the use of the throttle pedal. In addition, pilots can manually engage this extra power, when overtaking for example.

At a carbon fiber safety cell on the passenger's side is where the electric flywheel accumulator, with its rotor spinning up to 40,000 rpm and storing energy mechanically as rotational energy, is located. The accumulator is place there along with the other hybrid components. At a glance, the new GT3 R Hybrid can be clearly differentiated from the 2010 model. The large louvres in front of the rear fenders were no longer needed due to the optimization of the hybrid system's high voltage components. This lessens the drag and fuel consumption. Lamborghini is putting together plans for the launch of several new models in the next two to three years, such as the Estoque four-door, the carbon-fiber-intensive Sesto Elemento and a Gallardo replacement that may be named the Cabrera. Lamborghini, which is a unit of the Volkswagen Group, has also prepared a long-range blueprint for its future, depending a lot on VW Group platforms as the building blocks for a new set of Lamborghinis from now until 2020. Media have been speculating wildly about Lamborghini's future plans and how much the Volkswagen Group will influence it in terms of vehicle architectures and powertrains. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann himself has allowed the speculation to intensify as he has implied during interviews with several publications that the Estoque, presented as a concept at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, is nearing production.

It’s also believed that the Sesto Elemento, which was displayed as a concept last fall at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, is also moving towards production. Winkelmann said the Sesto Elemento illustrates the look of the super sports car of the future. He said to InsideLine that it will feature extreme lightweight engineering and have extreme performance results to add to the extreme driving fun. He said that this technological advantage – the spirit of the Sesto Elemento -- will be applied right across its model range. For 2011, the Aventador LP700-4 is Lamborghini's major new-model launch. This model was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show and it is slated to go into production later this year as the successor to the Murcielago.

Several European Web sites also speculate that Lamborghini is planning a replacement for the Gallardo, which will soon be discontinued. This entry-level Lambo may be dubbed the Cabrera, named after one of the foundational bloodlines of Spanish fighting bulls. It also forecasts that a Cabrera Spyder will arrive in 2014. Fan site Teamspeed.com provided details of Lamborghini's new model plans for the next decade. It stated that the Sesto Elemento and an Aventador roadster may arrive in 2012; the Gallardo replacement could get here in 2013, and the Estoque in 2014. Teamspeed.com also revealed that a "next-gen V10" will power both the Cabrera and the Estoque. Starting April 1, Karl-Friedrich Stracke will replace Nick Reilly as CEO of General Motors Co.’s Opel/Vauxhall unit. For the past year and a half, Stracke has headed GM's global vehicle engineering. Stracke will directly report to Reilly, who will continue to lead GM's European operations and will be nominated to be the chairman of the Opel supervisory board. GM said that the move strengthens its management as its European operations proceed with their growth plan.

In a statement, GM CEO Dan Akerson said that GM considers the European market and its European operations to be important and so these actions will guarantee that it will put in the best leadership as it continues to grow and improve profitability. Stracke has been with GM for 32 years. He is joining Opel/Vauxhall as it seeks to become profitable once again after having had to reduce capacity by a fifth and cut about 8,000 of its 48,000 workforce.

For 2010, GM Europe was GM's only unprofitable division. Returning to profitability would be the key to GM Europe's recovery. Last year, GM lost $1.76 billion in Europe. GM Europe is expected to break even this year, before restructuring costs are taken into account. Aside from serving on the Opel supervisory board, Reilly will also continue to oversee Chevrolet and Cadillac in Europe. Porsche prepares to appeal to investors as a stand-alone entity

As the merger with Volkswagen now seems unlikely, Porsche Automobil Holding SE is getting ready to draw up a strategy to attract investors as a stand-alone entity. Finance chief Hans Dieter Poetsch said on Thursday that he can’t say with certainty what type of approach Porsche SE will take but he believes that it’s more likely that Volkswagen will simply exercise an option to take control of the shares in Porsche AG it does not already own without combining with Porsche SE first.

Notably, VW Group has a 49.9% stake in Porsche AG. According to Poetsche, Porsche SE wants to entice shareholders subscribing to its 5 billion euro ($6.97 billion) capital increase with a payout in June, since the new shares will have full dividend rights to its shortened fiscal year that ended in December. A Porsche spokesman said that the shareholders will be shown the proposal together with the invitation to the June 1

7 shareholders meeting at the latest. Poetsch also predicted a profitable year, excluding any one-off effects including possible writedowns on its put and call options connected to its 50.1% stake in Porsche AG. Porsche SE said last month that legal and tax uncertainties have lessened the probability of the merger with Volkswagen this year to about 50%.
