Hyundai U.S. dealers to fix a steering problem found in some 2011 Sonatas

After receiving over 4,000 complaints on the steering system of the 2011 Sonata mid-sized sedans, Hyundai Motor America announced that its U.S. dealers are prepared to undertake repairs. The company clarifies that this is not a recall but is a service campaign. According to drivers, the 2011 Sonata has a tendency to drift or pull to the left. Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor said that this problem may affect around 41,000 Sonatas with 18-inch wheels.

He said that the complaints that it has received or has tracked account for just 3% of the almost 150,000 Sonatas produced during the period from September 2010 through April 2011, according to AutoWeek. A total of 198 complaints on the 2011 Sonata's steering were received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

These complaints were similar to the problems involved in this campaign. Trainor said that customers could call their dealer to set up an appointment so that the Sonata's wheel alignment and tracking can be examined and fixed. If the dealer determines that the car is affected by the issue, new front suspension struts will be installed and they may also perform a wheel alignment. Both of these processes will be done for free. In 2010, Hyundai issued the recall of about 138,000 2011 Sonatas but this stemmed from complaints that a steering shaft may get detached from the steering wheel.[via - 4wheelsnews]
