Smart eBike ready to go on sale in 2012

The smart ebike will enter series production as Daimler officially made the announcement that we will see it on the streets in 2012. Smart, as a pioneer of local emission-free electric mobility, is expanding its e-product portfolio with this step. A near-series smart ebike version will be on display at the "Eurobike" show in Friedrichshafen from August 31 to September 3, 2011, as well as at the Frankfurt Motor Show from September 13 – 25, 2011. The smart ebike was developed and manufactured in cooperation with the renowned Berlin-based e-bike manufacturer GRACE. It will be launched in the first half next year and will be marketed by dealers in Europe -- including the UK -- and North America.

The company’s CEO Dr. Annette Winkler stated that the smart ebike is a true smart, but on two wheels. It is an extremely well-designed bicycle that will surely draw plenty of attention in the city. In addition, it is really practical and easy to ride. Anyone can zoom through town on it without having to exert themselves, depending on their fitness level and their mood. It is also even easier to find a parking space than with the smart fortwo. Power-assisted mobility on two wheels is in.

Based on the data from the association of the two-wheeler industry (ZIV), German sales figures alone increased to 200,000 in 2010 from 70,000 in 2007. In 2018, the ZIV forecasts that e-bikes will comprise 15 percent of all bicycle sales in the country. Sales are also booming throughout Europe as a whole. In 2007, around 200,000 people chose an electric bicycle. According to the ZIV, by 2009, this figure had already increased to 500,000. In 2010, about 700,000 e-bikes were sold throughout the European region, an increase of 40 percent versus the figure last year. The smart ebike is at an exceptional position as it has functions that are appropriate for city use, a non-traditional design in line with the style of the brand, and high technology standards that are proven by the very efficient and high-performance drive package.[via - 4wheelsnews]
